A lockdown project

The non-essential shops, restaurants and terraces (of bakeries for ex.) closed on 22 December and did not re-open until end of March. This was about the extent of the lockdown here and we went out for walks on a daily basis.

However, Jenny took on the project of baking recipes of various cantons (there are 23 of them) – a work in progress.

Over the winter period, we tasted the following:

Projet de confinement

Les magasins non-essentiels, restaurants et terrasses (de boulangeries, par ex.) ont été fermés du décembre à fin mars. Le confinement s’est à peu près limité à ça et nous avons pu sortir faire de belles balades quotidiennes.

Toutefois, Jenny a entrepris un projet de cuisiner un plat de chacun des 23 cantons – en cours.

Ainsi, pendant l’hiver, nous avons goûté les spécialités suivantes :

Aargauer Rueblitorte, canton Aargau; carrots are THE vegetable of the canton; in normal times, there is an annual carrot market (first Wednesday of November)

Biberli, Appenzell: it is a gingerbread filled with marzipan

Lözärner Lebkuchen, Lucerne: I had heard about this gingerbread but never tasted it; it is softer and moistier than most.

Tarte au vin cuit (“cooked wine” ), cantons Fribourg and Vaud (both claim it) : in spite of its name, there is no wine and no grapes in it but concentrated pear. I followed the recipe of Stéphane Décotterd, the tart came out much lighter in colour than the dark brown one often sees.

Toétché, canton Jura, a savoury cake that is good for an apéritif, with a glass of white wine and some florets of Tête de Moine.

Thurgauer Öpfelturte, canton Thurgau, the apple is the prime culture of the canton (there is even a “Miss Apple” contest), a génoise base with apples on top. I prefer a good old simple apple tart, but I suppose this would last a bit longer in a large family.

Cancelled Carnival

This year, Carnival has been cancelled due to the pandemic. Last year, the first lockdown started just at the end of it.

Still, many shops, which are closed, decorated their windows with masks, costumes and photographs of past carnivals. There were also some floats in various parts of town. Children walked around in fancy clothes for a few days, joined by adults on Mardi Gras.

Le Carnaval a été annulé à cause de la pandémie. L’an dernier, le lockdown avait commencé juste après sa tenue.

Toutefois, de nombreux magasins, pourtant fermés, ont décoré leurs vitrinez avec des masques, des costumes et des photographies de carnavals précédents. Des chars étaient également placés en divers points de la ville. Les enfants se sont baladés déguisés pendant plusieurs jours, rejoints par des groupes d’adultes le mardi gras.

Winter scenery

The month of January saw several episodes of  snowfall and we find going for walks in snow-covered landscapes is beautiful. We enjoyed going out on our usual 7 km loop along the Aar, watching dogs running madly through the fresh powder and it did not matter whether the sun was out or not.

Le mois de janvier nous a offert plusieurs journées de neige et nous aimons nous balader dans ces paysages enneigés.  Nous avons fait notre boucle de 7k le long de l’Aar à de nombreuses reprises.  Voir les chiens s’amuser dans la neige faisait plaisir à voir, soleil ou pas

Fun with snow in town

This town is beautiful all year round, but we were lucky to see it under snow.

Joies de la neige en ville

La ville est belle toute l’année mais nous avons eu la chance de la voir sous la neige.

The steps leading to the cathedral were cleared but the snow was kindly turned into a toboggan run, much to the joy of the children.

Les escaliers menant au parvis de la cathédrale avaient été déblayés mais la neige transformée en piste de luge pour les enfants.


	


	



					
						


	

		
Quiet December

The Advent period was quiet this year with Christmas markets, carol choirs and all events cancelled. This is what December looked like in our little town.










La période de l’Avent a été calme : le marché de Noël, les chorales et tous les autres évènements annulés. Quelques images du mois de décembre dans notre petite ville.

	


	



					
						


	

		
Above the clouds

The stratus was staying stubbornly at about 800m, so we took the bus to go up on the Jura mountains. 35 minutes later, we were starting our short hike to the Röti and, at only 1395m, were rewarded with 360° views, well above the sea of fog.





The Alps were clearly visible, as was the whole Jura mountain chain we had hiked through in the summer. It was much warmer than under the clouds, mild enough to picnic in shirt-sleeves and soak up the sun. We will be going back up regularly in the winter.










Au-dessus des nuages





Les stratus sont coincés à environ 800m d’altitude; nous avons donc pris le bus pour monter sur le Jura. 35 minutes plus tard, nous commencions notre montée vers le Röti. La récompense à 1395m : une vue à 360° au-dessus de la mer de brouillard.





Les Alpes étaient bien visibles ainsi que toute la chaîne du Jura que nous avions parcourue cet été. Il faisait beaucoup plus chaud qu’en ville et nous avons pique-niqué au soleil, sans veste. Nous y retournerons régulièrement durant l’hiver.

	


	



					
						


	

		
November strolls

While the early mornings are foggy, the weather usually clears in the afternoon, allowing us to go on lovely walks on the outskirts of the town. Coming to the end of the month, the leaves are now almost gone.










Balades de novembre





Même quand il y a du brouillard tôt le matin, le ciel est souvent dégagé l’après-midi. Nous pouvons ainsi profiter des alentours pour de belles balades. A la fin du mois, les feuilles ont presque toutes disparues.

	


	



					
						


	

		
Autumn days

With large numbers of new Covid 19 cases, we have suspended our hikes. However, we are lucky to live in Solothurn where a 5 minute stroll takes us to the edge of town for leisurely walks along the Aare river. Autumn is a lovely season with the air clear and the trees in all shades of warm tone colours. A treat for the eyes and the soul.










Les chiffres élevés de nouvelles contaminations au Covid nous ont amenés à suspendre la plupart de nos randonnées. Toutefois, nous avons la chance d’habiter à Soleure où il suffit de 5 minutes à pied pour se retrouver en bordure de ville. Nous faisons donc de superbes balades au bord de l’Aar.
L’automne est une belle saison pour se promener: l’air est clair et la végétation se pare de couleurs aux tons chauds, ce qui fait du bien aux yeux et à l’âme.

	


	



					
						


	

		
Trans Swiss Trail, stage 1

The Trans-Swiss Trail nr 2 goes from Porrentruy, in the Jura, to Mendrisio in Ticino, passing through Neuchâtel, Berne and the Emmental. It shares some paths with the Via Gottardo, notably the valleys leading to and from the Gotthard.





Porrentruy surprised us: instead of a big village, we discovered a small town of 6,600 inhabitants with a definitely French feel to it. The stage goes through many woods and ends at the pretty but very touristic small town of St-Ursanne on the Doubs river. Unfortunately, the whole day was overcast.










Le Trans Swiss Trail N° 2 relie Porrentruy, dans le canton du Jura, à Mendrisio, au Tessin. Il passe par les villes de Neuchâtel et Berne et traverse l’Emmental. Il partage quelques étapes avec la Via Gottardo, notamment les vallées amenant et quittant le Gothard.





Porrentruy nous a surpris, nous attendions un gros village et avons trouvé une petite ville de 6’600 habitants avec un petit air français. L’ étape nous fait passer par des bois et finit dans la jolie mais très touristique petite ville de St-Ursanne, sur le Doubs. Malheureusement, le ciel était couvert du début à la fin.
