Hats in Montappone

Montappone, a small town in Marche, is in the centre of Europe’s most important hat-making district. Over 60 million hats are produced yearly in the area, 70% of Italy’s and 50% of Europe’s production.

The village has a small museum, showing old machinery, photographs, hats (including Federico Fellini’s last hat, donated by his sister) and a corner where one can choose a hat to wear and be photographed; the computer was down.

Montappone, un village dans les Marche, est le centre du plus important district de fabrication de chapeaux d’Europe. Plus de 60 millions de pièces sont produites dans la région chaque année, représentant 70% et 50% des productions italienne et européenne, respectivement.

Le village a un petit musée qui présente les anciennes machines, des photos, chapeaux (y compris le dernier de Federico Fellini, donné par sa soeur) et un coin où l’on peut choisir un chapeau et se faire photographier; l’ordinateur ne fonctionnait pas.

Blocked paths

Today’s walk turned out to be much shorter than expected. The small stream we should have crossed had turned into a wide torrent following the heavy rains and snow melting. We could not pass, so we returned to our car and drove to Lago di Friastra, the end of the hike. We tried another path but trees blocked the way.

The area, including trails, has been affected by last August’s major earthquake and its many aftershocks. Some villages have been entirely evacuated, others partially.

 

La randonnée d’aujourd’hui a été plus courte que prévue. Le ruisseau que nous aurions dû traverser s’était transformé en un large torrent après les fortes pluies et la fonte des neiges. Des arbres bloquaient le passage d’un autre chemin. Nous avons dû faire demi-tour et avons conduit jusqu’au lac, fin du parcours.

La région, y compris les sentiers a été affectée par le tremblement de terre du mois d’août et ses nombreuses répliques. Quelques villages ont été entièrement évacués, d’autres partiellement.

Lloydkwartier, Rotterdam

The apartment is in the Schiecentrale, a former electricity transformation factory (hence the 8m high old photographs in the lobby), in the Lloydqwartier.

This part of town has kept several of its old warehouses, now transformed into apartments and office spaces. There is also the shipping industry university, several restaurants, a monument about slavery, theatres, some sporting facilities, a waterbus stop and ships moor just at the end of the street : a lively area.

L’appartement se trouve dans une ancienne usine électrique (des photographies d’époque de 8m de haut recouvrent les murs du hall d’entrée), dans le quartier Lloyd.

Quelques entrepôts ont été transformés en appartements et bureaux. Ici, on trouve aussi l’université de l’industrie maritime, plusieus restaurants, un monument à l’esclavage, des théâtres, des insallations sportives, un arrêt de bateau-bus et des bateaux sont amarrés au bout de la rue : un quartier vivant.

Architectural styles, Lausanne

Lausanne has a variety of architectural styles : besides the many 19th and 20th century buildings, there is Bernese influence on Place de la Palud, including the fountain. A long-standing landmark of the city, the Bel-Air tower was built between 1929 and 1932 in a modernist American style. The Flon neighbourhood was renewed and boasts innovative buildings. The Polytechnical School (EPFL)’s campus is also the home to some modern buildings, among others the Rolex Learning Centre.
Lausanne will also see a green tower (Tour des Cèdres), putting the town higher on the world’s architectural destinations.

Lausanne a de nombreux styles architecturaux, des bâtiments des 19 et 20e siècles à l’influence bernoise à la place de la Palud, en passant par le quartier rénové du Flon. La tour Bel-Air, construite entre 1929 et 1932 dans un style moderniste américain, est un des symboles de la ville. Le campus de l’EPFL (Ecole polytechnique fédérale) compte également quelques bâtiments intéressants, dont le Rolex Learning Centre).
Lausanne deviendra sans doute une destination architecturale prisée avec la construction de la “Tour des cèdres”.
