Since 1934, every year, the “Christmas Cup” takes place in Geneva. The lake water temperature is typically between 5 and 10°C and people have to swim a distance of 120m, as the saying goes “40m pain, 40m acceptance and 40m bliss”. The atmosphere is festive and there were 1885 participants this year, going by teams (competition, men, women, med students, fake women etc.) – you name it…

A hot sweet tea, a medal and a hot wood-fire jacuzzi await the brave swimmers (and the option of a cheese fondue..).

 

Depuis 1934, chaque année a lieu la Coupe de Noël. La température de l’eau du lac varie entre 5 et 10°c et le parcours est de 120m, soit “40m de souffrance, 40m d’acceptation et 40m de bonheur”. L’atmosphère est bon enfant et, cette année, il y avait 1885 participants, s’élançant par équipes (compétition, hommes, femmes, étudiants en médecine, déguisements – femmes, cygnes, pères Noël etc) – tout est permis.

Un thé sucré, une médaille commémorative et un jacuzzi chauffé au feu de bois attendent les courageux nageurs à l’arrivée (et fondue au fromage en option).

Entlebuch

A 5-hour long hike in the UNESCO-listed natural park of Entlebuch, passing through meadows, marsh and karst fields. Then a last push to reach the top and walk right along the ridge. Another beautiful day!


Une randonnée de 5 heures dans le parc naturel de l’Entlebuch, à travers des prés, des marais et des roches karstiques. Finalement, une dernière montée pour atteindre le sommet et marcher le long de la crête. Encore une belle journée

Pilatus

A beautiful day’s hike from the end of a valley, up 1000m to reach the top of Pilatus.
At the summit (2130m), the view is 360 degrees, and offers great plunging views of the Four Cantons Lake. The Alpine panorama is also stunning: from the Säntis in the East to the Bernese Alps and the Eiger-Mönch-Jungfrau and the Wallis 4000+m all glittering in the sun.

 


Une magnifique journée vers le fond d’une vallée avant de monter de 1000m pour atteindre le sommet du Pilate.
De là, à 2100m, la vue est de 360 degrés et plonge sur le lac des Quatre-Cantons. Le panorama alpin est un régal: du Säntis à l’est aux alpes bernoises. Le trio Eiger-Mönch-Jungrau et les 4000+m valaisans dominant le tout sous un soleil éclatant.

Der Grosser Mythe, Schwyz

The Mythen mountains are a popular destination in canton Schwyz. We hiked 800m up to the top of the bigger one. The clouds were playing around us and we had not even seen the hut until we got there.


Les montagnes Mythen sont une destination populaire dans le canton de Schwyz. Nous sommes arrivés au sommet de la Grosse Mythe après 800m de montée. Les nuages jouaient à cache-cache et nous n’avions pas vu la cabane avant d’y arriver.

Shortish walk along Walensee

We are back in Switzerland, returning to a house-sit, overlooking Zug and its lake.
We went on a shortish walk along Walensee towards Quinten. The village, at the foot of the Churfisten, benefits from a pleasant micro-climate and is accessible only on foot or by boat.


Nous sommes en Suisse pour un house-sit où nous étions venus en mai, au-dessus de Zoug et son lac.
Aujourd’hui, nous avons fait une promenade le long du Walensee, en direction de Quinten. Ce village, au pied des Churfisten, bénéficie d’un micro-climat agréable et n’est accessible qu’à pied ou par bateau.

Rapperswil

We just had (a couple of) wonderful times with our friends, Debbie and Niels, as well as their children and other friends.

Today, on our way back, we stopped at the lovely town of Rapperswil. We went up to the castle, which offers great views over Lake Zurich and the Alps. The atmosphere was festive, as a wedding was taking place there, complete with alphorn, women in different cantonal traditional costumes and a music band. The castle also hosts a Polish museum.

Nous avons passé de bons moments en compagnie de nos amis Debbie, Niels, leurs enfants et d’autres amis.Aujourd’hui, en rentrant, nous nous sommes arrêtés dans la jolie petite ville de Rapperswil. Nous sommes montés vers le château qui offre de belles vues sur le lac de Zurich et les Alpes. L’atmosphère était festive car un mariage s’y déroulait avec costumes de diverses régions, cor des Alpes et fanfare. Le château abrite le musée polonais.

Architectural styles, Lausanne

Lausanne has a variety of architectural styles : besides the many 19th and 20th century buildings, there is Bernese influence on Place de la Palud, including the fountain. A long-standing landmark of the city, the Bel-Air tower was built between 1929 and 1932 in a modernist American style. The Flon neighbourhood was renewed and boasts innovative buildings. The Polytechnical School (EPFL)’s campus is also the home to some modern buildings, among others the Rolex Learning Centre.
Lausanne will also see a green tower (Tour des Cèdres), putting the town higher on the world’s architectural destinations.

Lausanne a de nombreux styles architecturaux, des bâtiments des 19 et 20e siècles à l’influence bernoise à la place de la Palud, en passant par le quartier rénové du Flon. La tour Bel-Air, construite entre 1929 et 1932 dans un style moderniste américain, est un des symboles de la ville. Le campus de l’EPFL (Ecole polytechnique fédérale) compte également quelques bâtiments intéressants, dont le Rolex Learning Centre).
Lausanne deviendra sans doute une destination architecturale prisée avec la construction de la “Tour des cèdres”.
