Hospice du Grand-Saint-Bernard

The hospice of St-Bernard has been hosting travellers and pilgrims for almost 1,000 years. It sits at an altitude of almost 2,500m and on the border with Italy (the first photo is of the hospice seen from the Italian side of the lake).
The road to the pass is closed from October to June and, during these months, is only accessible on skis and snowshoes. Still, over 11,000 people stay overnight every year.

Initially, it was built to give shelter to people braving the cold, avalanches and thieves. Nowadays, in summer, most people get there by car.

It is really a special place and we are glad to have stayed there.
