Kralingen, Rotterdam

The Kralingse Bos forest encircles the Kralingse Plas lake and covers 200 hectares. The lake was created towards the end of the 19th century as a result of peat extraction.

Today, we took advantage of the warm (28°) and sunny weather to cycle to this wonderful part of Rotterdam. The tour of the lake is about 5km long, and offers great views of the city’s skyline.

 

 

La forêt de Kralingen entoure le lac du même nom et couvre 200 hectares. Le lac fut créé à la fin du 19e siècle sur un terrain d’extraction de tourbe.

Aujourd’hui, nous avons profité des excellentes conditions météorologiques (28°) et avons enfourché nos bicyclettes pour nous rendre dans ce joli coin de Rotterdam. Le tour du lac fait à peu près 5km et offre de belles vues sur la ville.

Lille

A short stopover in the pleasant city of Lille on our way back to the Netherlands in summer-like temperatures of up to 25°. The sun highlights the warm tones of the buildings in the old town.

 

Un petit détour par Lille avant de retourner aux Pays-Bas. Les températures estivales (jusqu’ 25°) et le soleil mettent en valeur les tons chauds des bâtiments de la vieille ville

Schiedam

Schiedam is a small town, known for having the tallest traditionally-built windmills in the world and many distilleries producing jenever gin. It is a lovely place an easy bike or tram ride from Rotterdam

Schiedam est une petite ville connue pour avoir les plus hauts moulins à vent du monde, construits de manière traditionnelle ainsi que de nombreuses distilleries produisant une eau de vie de genièvre. C’est un endroit agréable, facilement accessible en vélo ou tram depuis Rotterdam

Amsterdam after the freeze

We are in Amsterdam for a few days’ housesit.

Temperatures have risen sharply over the past couple of days and, while hundreds of people enjoyed the freeze and skated on the canals on Friday and Saturday, it is no longer possible.

Nous sommes à Amsterdam pour un housesit de quelques jours.

Les températures sont montées abruptement ces derniers jours et, si des centaines ont profité du froid pour patiner sur les canaux gelés vendredi et samedi, cela n’est déjà plus possible.

Sauna in Frihamnen

We went a couple of times to the free sauna of Frihamnen, in a former shipbuilding industry area. The building, by a Berlin architecture group, is mostly made of recycled materials. The changing rooms and showers walls are made up of 12,000 glass bottles, there is also an open air heated pool (from May to October) and good views of the city, across the river.

 

Nous sommes allés deux fois au sauna gratuit de Frihamnen, dans une ancienne zone de construction navale. Le bâtiment, conçu par un collectif d’architectes berlinois, est construit avec des matériaux recyclés. Les murs des vestiaires et douches ont été réalisés avec 12000 bouteilles en verre. Il y a également une piscine de plein air chauffée (ouverte de mai à octobre) et de belles vues sur la ville, de l’autre côté de la rivière.

A small trip to the archipelago

It was supposed to be the last day of sunshine for the rest of our stay, so we took a ferry to the island of Vrångö in the Gothenburg archipelago. Most of that island is a natural reserve and we spent a couple of hours walking around. While quietly sitting down for a cup of tea, a fox passed by.

La météo prévoyait une dernière journée ensoleillée avant l’arrivée du mauvais temps, nous avons donc pris un ferry pour l’île de Vrångö, dans l’archipel de Göteborg. La plus grande partie de l’île est une réserve naturelle et nous l’avons parcourue pendant deux heures. Alors que nous buvions silencieusement une tasse de thé, un renard est passé à quelques mètres.

Coupe de Noël 2017

Since 1934, every year, the “Christmas Cup” takes place in Geneva. The lake water temperature is typically between 5 and 10°C and people have to swim a distance of 120m, as the saying goes “40m pain, 40m acceptance and 40m bliss”. The atmosphere is festive and there were 1885 participants this year, going by teams (competition, men, women, med students, fake women etc.) – you name it…

A hot sweet tea, a medal and a hot wood-fire jacuzzi await the brave swimmers (and the option of a cheese fondue..).

 

Depuis 1934, chaque année a lieu la Coupe de Noël. La température de l’eau du lac varie entre 5 et 10°c et le parcours est de 120m, soit “40m de souffrance, 40m d’acceptation et 40m de bonheur”. L’atmosphère est bon enfant et, cette année, il y avait 1885 participants, s’élançant par équipes (compétition, hommes, femmes, étudiants en médecine, déguisements – femmes, cygnes, pères Noël etc) – tout est permis.

Un thé sucré, une médaille commémorative et un jacuzzi chauffé au feu de bois attendent les courageux nageurs à l’arrivée (et fondue au fromage en option).
