Toledo

We have left Zurich for Madrid, where we met with John’s brother and his wife with whom we will travel for a few weeks on and off during their European holidays.
Madrid was rainy, cold and windy but by the time we left for Toledo the weather had improved, although it was still cool.

Toledo is a former capital of Spain and is also known as the “City of the Three Cultures” for the influences of Christians, Muslims and Jews reflected in its history. It had large communities of Muslims and Jews until they were expelled from Spain in 1492 and 1502. The city has been on the World Heritage list since 1986.

It is also in Toledo that the painter El Greco received several major commissions, produced his best-known paintings and is buried.

We stayed overnight and enjoyed strolling through its narrow lanes, had some great tapas and started the new day with chocolate con churros.
