Lausanne has a variety of architectural styles : besides the many 19th and 20th century buildings, there is Bernese influence on Place de la Palud, including the fountain. A long-standing landmark of the city, the Bel-Air tower was built between 1929 and 1932 in a modernist American style. The Flon neighbourhood was renewed and boasts innovative buildings. The Polytechnical School (EPFL)’s campus is also the home to some modern buildings, among others the Rolex Learning Centre.
Lausanne will also see a green tower (Tour des Cèdres), putting the town higher on the world’s architectural destinations.

Lausanne a de nombreux styles architecturaux, des bâtiments des 19 et 20e siècles à l’influence bernoise à la place de la Palud, en passant par le quartier rénové du Flon. La tour Bel-Air, construite entre 1929 et 1932 dans un style moderniste américain, est un des symboles de la ville. Le campus de l’EPFL (Ecole polytechnique fédérale) compte également quelques bâtiments intéressants, dont le Rolex Learning Centre).
Lausanne deviendra sans doute une destination architecturale prisée avec la construction de la “Tour des cèdres”.

Markthal

Rotterdam’s market hall took five years to complete and is a mix of office space, apartments and, of course, a food market. It has huge windows on both sides, giving plenty of natural daylight and, when inside, it is possible to see some of the landmarks of the city like the “pencil”, the public library and the cubic houses.

The interior artwork represents enlarged fruit, vegetables, seeds, flowers, fish and insects.

La construction des halles de Rotterdam a pris 5 ans. Ce bâtiment comprend des bureaux, des appartements et, bien sûr, un grand marché. La lumière naturelle entre par les grandes parois vitrées des deux côtés, qui permettent également d’admirer quelques-uns des bâtiments les plus célèbres de la ville, tels que le “crayon”, la bibliothèque et les maisons-cubes.

L’intérieur est décoré par d’immenses peintures illustrant des fruits, légumes, graines, poissons et insectes.

Palma de Mallorca

Some photos of Palma’s attractive buildings before we left for Barcelona, where we had not set foot since 1984 … Although we had spent 3 weeks in the Barrio Gotico in April-May 1981, back when the city had not yet become a major touristic destination, we could not find the flat we had occupied and re-painted.

Quelques photos de magnifiques bâtiments du vieux Palma avant de partir pour Barcelone, où nous n’étions pas retournés depuis 1984 …
Bien que nous ayons passé 3 semaines dans le “quartier gothique” en avril-mai 1981, avant que la ville ne devienne une destination touristique majeure, nous n’avons pas pu retrouver l’appartement que nous avions occupé et repeint.

 

Dadaocheng, Taipei

We are now in Taipei, Taiwan, named World Design Capital for 2016.

Buildings in Dadaocheng are undergoing renovations and this old neighbourhood is a mixture of traditional Chinese shops and cool, design, new stores.

Nous sommes maintenant à Taipei, Taiwan, nommée Capitale Mondiale du Design pour 2016.

Les bâtiments de Dadaocheng sont, pour beaucoup, rénovés et ce vieux quartier présente un mélange d’échoppes chinoises traditionnelles et des magasins designs dernier cri.

Say “Cheese”

Although tourism in Myanmar has grown exponentially over the past few years, Westerners are still a novelty for many people and we have posed for many photos. Lately, it was a little girl who, while visiting Shwezigon Pagoda near Bagan with her grandparents, asked Jenny to be photographed with her. Most people have smartphones and selfie sticks are popular too.

 

Bien que le tourisme ait augmenté de manière exponentielle ces dernières années, les Occidentaux sont encore une nouveauté pour beaucoup de Birmans. Nous avons pris la pose pour de nombreuses personnes. Il y a quelques jours, lors de la visite d’un temple près de Bagan, une petite fille qui le visitait avec ses grand-parents a demandé à Jenny de poser avec elle. La plupart des gens ont des smartphones et des supports à selfies.
