Parque natural de Cabo de Gata

This natural park is located in the province of Almería and is the largest protected coastal area in Andalusia.

Its coasts have offshore coral reefs.  A 120 km2 part of the total designated protected area is a marine reserve, extending underwater to a depth of 60 m.

Historically, due to the harsh conditions for agriculture and its isolated location, habitation has been sparse and this has kept the area relatively unspoilt, an unusual feature along the Spanish Mediterranean coast.  There are some beautiful beaches. It was extremely windy and quite fresh when we were there and the sea was rough.

We stayed at Níjar, a village on the flank of the hill. From there, one can see the mountains of the park, behind the greenhouses, known as the sea of plastic. A lot of Europe’s vegetables come from here (looking at you, year-around tomato).

To the north of the park and Almeria is the Desierto de Tabernas, where many films were shot, including the spaghetti westerns of the 60s and 70s.  There are a number of attraction parks in the area (Texas Hollywood, Western Leone, etc.).  We drove through this area on our way to Granada.

Des récifs coralliens se trouvent le long de ses côtes. Environ 120 km2 du total de la zone protégée est une réserve marine, deescendant à une profondeur de 60 m.

Historiquement, les conditions extrêmes pour l’agriculture et la situation isolée du parc ont fait que peu de villages se sont construits dans la région. Cela a permis de garder cette zone peu développée, chose inhabituelle le long de la côte méditerranéenne espagnole. Il y a de belles plages mais il faisait frais, avec de fortes bourrasques et la mer était agitée.

Nous nous sommes basés à Níjar, un village à flanc de coteau d’où l’on peutvoirles montagnes du parc, au-delà des serres de la “mer de plastique”.  Beaucoup des légumes européens proviennent d’ici, entre autres les tomates produites toute l’année.

Au nord du parc et d’Almeria se trouve le désert de Tabernas où un grand nombre de films ont été tournés, entre autres les westerns-spaghetti des années 60 et 70. Il y a quelques parcs d’attraction dans le coin (Texas Hollywood, Western Leone, etc.). Nous sommes passés par là pour nous rendre à Grenade.
