Bocairent

This lovely small town is situated in a low mountain area of the Community of Valencia.  Perched on a hill, its meandering streets make for a very pleasant day trip from Valencia or, as was our case, a stopover on the way south, away from the coast.  There were some (mostly Spanish) tourists but this was not a “preserved” village, but a lived-in place, with local bars. We tasted the area’s drink of Herbero (in a dessert), a liqueur made with wild herbs from the nearby mountains.

Overlooking the village is a church and we walked up there. There are small chapels on the way up, all the stations of the cross.

Cette jolie petite ville se situe dans une région de basses montagnes dans la Communauté valencienne. Perchée sur une colline, il est plaisant d’y faire étape en allant vers le sud ou de la visiter depuis Valence. Il y avait quelques touristes espagnols mais la ville n’est pas un musée, elle est habitée et il y a de nombreux bars bien fréquentés par la population locale. Nous avons goûté la liqueur locale, l’Herbero (dans un dessert), faite avec des herbes sauvages des environs.

Au-dessus de la ville, sur une autre colline, il y a une église. Le chemin en zig-zag est agrémenté de petites chapelles : ce sont les  stations du chemin de croix.
